SHORT STORIES & CARTOONS & WHATNOT
1
I love writing 100 word stories. The format is challenging and I use it to practice the art of saying a lot with as few words as possible. I’ve selected 4 of my faves below.

There are also a selection of cartoons I’ve created over the years back when I aspired to be either the next Bill Waterson or George Booth. Now I do them just for fun. It’s better that way. Follow my cartoons on facebook if you feel it.

AGAINST THE EARTH’S SWEET FLOWING BREAST
On either side of the river stood two majestic oaks. They had loved each other for 100 years, yearning to be intertwined. Next year, their branches might finally touch.
The Ferryman, angered by their leaves sullying his boat, demanded the wizard bring his axe.
The Wizard tried reason, but The Ferryman was steadfast.
“Fear not,” the kindly Wizard whispered to the trees. “You shall have your wish.”

These people, like the man standing in front of him, would never understand him; how important he was.
Still, he lowered it slowly, handed it over, and grinned.
Then he turned away and continued down the street, ringing the bell, gathering more customers.

It spoke to me, this beat up old typewriter I snagged for $25 at a yard sale.
The moment I set it down on my desk two letters jumped to life.

Then I.
“Hi”!?
That was 20 years ago. Since then it has ghostwritten more than a dozen epic best sellers that I have claimed for my own, making me wealthy beyond my wildest dreams.
And now I want to focus on 100 word stories but it just can’t seem to work within such strict parameters. Every time the word count gets close, I yell “stop” but
A LONG WAY FROM HOME
He took up running the day she left.
It was the same day he turned 60, and for the last five years he’s stretched out his distances.
Today was the furthest so far.
Half way, he paused and rested his hands on his knees. 20 miles out is a long way from home, he thought.
Then he looked toward the heavens and laughed. “A long way from home” is relative, and his reason for running was out there somewhere.
By the time his daughter returns from Mars he will be 70.
